Call for Submissions: The Devil You Know (Anti-Hero Anthology)

by Nyctophilia

Submission Guidelines

All submissions should include the main character or characters who fit the description of an anti-hero.

Vocabulary.com defines an anti-hero as: The main character of a story, but one who doesn’t act like a typical hero. Antiheroes are often a little villainous.

Here are some examples of anti-heroes in film, television, books, and other media: Han Solo, Jay Gatsby, Dexter Morgan, Loki, Holden Caulfield, Captain Jack Sparrow, Regina Mills, Walter White, Dr. Gregory House, Faith Lehane, Hamlet, Geralt of Rivia, Annalise Keating, Jamie and Tyrion Lannister, John Constantine, Jessica Jones, Arthur Dent, Daryl Dixon, Batman, Catherine Earnshaw, Tony Soprano, Kaz Brekker, Kara “Starbuck” Thrace, Damon Salvatore, Severus Snape, and many many more!

We’re basically looking for a hero with some flaws, someone who may even be begrudgingly helping in a situation they wouldn’t normally find themselves in!

Stories from all subgenres of Fantasy and Science Fiction will be considered for this anthology. We’d like a pretty even match between the two main genres.

No erotica stories will be considered for this anthology.

All stories must be between 5,000 words and 20,000 words.

All stories submitted should be professionally edited to eliminate as many errors as possible. Submissions riddled with obvious errors will be rejected.

Each story must be able to stand alone. This does not mean you can’t use characters from your other books, just that the anthology story itself should be able to be read separately and still make sense.

Marketing and Pay

This is a for-profit anthology, meaning each author will receive an equal share of royalties from the sale of this book. The publisher will claim no share of the royalties.

Each accepted story will remain exclusive to the anthology for 90 days. After 90 days, you will retain your rights to publish the story elsewhere. The book will remain for sale on Amazon after the 90 days is up and be available for as long as the publisher deems suitable.

Not every story submitted will be accepted. You are trusted to act in a professional and supportive way if your story is not selected. No bashing or negative comments will be tolerated.

Please know that each and every story is carefully read and considered based on many factors including readiness for publishing, theme compliance, and value to the anthology as a whole. If your story is not selected, you will immediately retain your rights to publish the story elsewhere.

Fees and Expectations

There is a one-time non-refundable submission fee of $10.

This will all go toward marketing, cover design, and editing costs. There will also be a donation taken up before publishing to help pay for advertising. Participation in this second donation is optional but appreciated. Payment information is available on the submission form.

The success of the anthology will come from group communication and collaboration. Each selected member will be expected to share social media links and campaigns with their friends and followers in a cooperative marketing effort to benefit everyone in the anthology. This may include arranging newsletter swaps, blog features, or reaching out to any resources the author may possess.
